The last time the Coronado Islander girls’ volleyball team squared off against the Helix Highlanders was in August 2023. While not a blowout, Helix handled Coronado with relative ease, taking the match 3-0 in sets.

Fast-forward over a calendar year later, and the two teams met again on the Islander’s home court. However, this year’s match would have a different tone and outcome as Coronado avenged last season’s loss by taking the Highlanders 3-0 in sets.

There was never a question of who the better team was on the court, with the Islanders winning all three sets 25-8, 25-11, and 28-25, respectively.

During Wednesday night’s win, Coronado continued to excel when on serve. Coronado peppered the Helix side of the floor with 16 total aces and an impressive 21.1% ace percentage on the night. Six Islanders would collect two or more aces on the night, with the team-high belonging to senior Emily Page, who logged three.

Page showcased her jump and floater serves all night, utilizing both to nab aces and put Helix in spots where they could not set up consistent or quality attack looks. She would also collect 13 assists and six kills in the win.

On the attacking end, Coronado would again see critical contributions from several Islanders, but none more vital than from Sadie Proctor. Proctor, who has made a name for herself as one of the better outsider hitters in San Diego, logged a season-high 11 kills and 3.7 kills per set on the night.

Freshmen Ashlynn Proctor and Emily Albin would also have impressive attacking nights with six and four kills, respectively. Junior Ariana Van Handel would also join the fun with five kills of her own.

However, a large part of Coronado’s success on the attack would be predicted, yet again, by how well the Islanders were able to handle the ball. Senior Elle Bradbury would work relentlessly to put Islanders outside hitters in spots to do damage as she would tally a team-high 18 assists on the night.

Overall, Coronado’s crushing of Helix was just another of the Lady Islanders’ many dominant performances. Dominance that would also continue into Labor Day weekend, as Coronado went 4-1 in the Sweetwater Tournament with wins against El Camino, Morse, Holtville, and Rancho Buena Vista.

The 5-1 week would push Coronado’s record to 12-3 on the young season. While the season is not even at the halfway point, and league play is still in their future, folks cannot ignore what the Lady Islanders are building this season.

The roster is filled with top-tier talent. They play an explosive yet level brand of volleyball and have the look of a team that can win anytime, anywhere, against anyone.
