The Coronado Islander girls’ volleyball team continued their torrent 2024 pace this past week, nabbing two road victories over West Hills and Olympian High School— both by the final score of 3-0.

Last year, Coronado would not earn their 15th win on the year until September 28th; this year, they earned that 15th win on September 6th. That should help put things into perspective for how impressive the Lady Islanders have been here in the early stages of 2024.

Now, it is worth noting that both West Hills and Olympian are struggling teams. The two opponents have combined to go just 4-17 on the year. Still, beating bad teams is what good teams do.

Starting with their match against Olympian, Coronado quickly established its dominance on the attack early, taking the first two sets 25-17 and 25-8.

Leading the way for the Lady Islanders would be senior outside hitter Sadie Proctor, as she would collect 14 kills in the win over the Eagles, good for 4.3 kills per set and a 61.9% kill%. Not too far behind Sadie’s pace would be her younger sister, freshman Ashlynn Proctor, who logged nine kills on the night. At the same time, junior Julia Jossett would collect five.

The Proctor duo has combined for 191 kills on the year, which accounts for just over 63% of the team’s total kills this season. The two are not only one of the best attacking duos in the City Eastern League but also have the look of one of the most lethal duos at the CIF DII level.

Helping the attack run so efficiently would be senior Emily Page. It was business as usual for the Biola University commit, who racked up 34 assists in the win. Page would also rack up four digs, second on the team to Lydia Schutt.

Along with an impressive showing on attack, the Islanders’ defense helped the cause, shelling out four blocks in the afternoon. Junior Madison Davis would have a team-high three blocks in the win. Blocks have not been a cornerstone for this Islanders team, but they did help provide them with a spark in Tuesday night’s win.

As usual, Coronado’s service game would also play a big part in their win, as they connected for a 20% ace percentage. Avalon Haro would lead all Islanders with four aces on the night, and Elle Bradbury would clock three total. As a team, Coronado would connect on over 80 percent of their serves.

With their record at 15-3, the Lady Islanders have put themselves in a very good spot, both short and long-term. They have the best record of any team in CIF DII and are the number two team in CIF DII. Also, per MaxPreps, they are ranked ninth in San Diego County. But perhaps their most impressive feat is that the Islanders are ranked in the top 50 in California.

Coronado will return to action this week with a game on September 11th against Granite Hills. The 9-3 Eagles, a fellow CIF DII team, should present a tough road test for the Islanders.
