The high-flying Lady Islanders volleyball team continued to make a joke out of the City Eastern League this past week, racking up two more wins over Mater Dei and University City.
The pair of 3-0 wins would mark the seventh straight match in which the Islanders had not dropped a set to their opponent. Furthermore, the wins would push their win streak to a season-high 16 games.
In their first battle of last week against Mater Dei, the Islanders easily handled the road test, taking the sets 25-12, 25-14, and 25-15.
Senior Emily Page took charge during last Tuesday’s win. The Islanders’ heartbeat, leader, and captain was exceptional in her service games, connecting for eight aces and a 32.7% ace percentage in the win. As she always does, Page continued to be the leading facilitator for the Islanders’ attack, posting a team-high 28 assists in the win.
The beneficiaries of Page’s outstanding ball distribution would be their opposite and outside hitters, Sadie Proctor and Ashlynn Proctor. Ashlynn Proctor would record a team-high 13 kills in the win, while Sadie Proctor would be right on her tail with 11 kills of her own.
The pair has combined for 580 kills this season. Along with Page and Emily Albin, they have made Coronado’s attack not only one of the best in San Diego but also in the state of California.
Following Tuesday’s win, Coronado would have a quick turnaround before hitting the road again for their showdown with University City. While the Centurions played Coronado closer, 25-19, 25-18, and 25-20, the Islanders still looked the part.
As a team, Coronado was steadfast on serve, posting a 90.3% serve percentage, 14 aces, and a 19.4% ace percentage. Lydia Schutt and Elle Bradbury made an impact from the service line, as both laced in two aces in the win.
On defense, the Islanders would come away with several set-changing blocks, as Emily Albin continued to make an impact in her freshman year with two blocks, while Ariana Van Handel also logged a rejection against the Centurions.
With the pair of wins this past week, Coronado’s record jumps to 28-3 on the year and a perfect 3-0 in City Eastern League play. A mark that, even while typing this story, is difficult to wrap one’s mind around.
Their 28-3 record has them ranked in the top 50 in California, as MaxPreps has them at number 42 overall. Meanwhile, inside San Diego, they sit as the number six ranked team in the county and the number one in CIF DII.
The Islanders will try to continue riding this heater this week as they are set for two more league matches with games against Mission Bay and Scripps Ranch. If the Islanders win both, they can hit the 30-win mark and inch closer to a league title.
