Have I mentioned that the Coronado Islanders Girls’ Volleyball team is good? Well, if you have missed my reminders in the past few weeks, hopefully, this article can help jog your memory because what the 2024 Islanders are doing is historic.
Coming into the week, the girls in green and white boasted a record of 28-3 on the season, and riding a 16 match win streak.
That 16-match win streak continued to be extended this week as Coronado collected two more wins, toppling two more City Eastern League Foes: Mission Bay 3-0 and Scripps Ranch 3-2. Pushed their record to 30-3 on the year.
Against Mission Bay, the Islanders would meet a bit more resistance than they did in their first meeting of the season. The first set remained tight, with Coronado holding just a 20-18 advantage heading at the tail end of the 1st.
Still, Coronado would dig deep and close the set out on a 5-3 run that was highlighted by an Ace by Sadie Proctor and a pair of teardrop kills by Ashlynn Proctor that would prove to be the final punch in the 25-21 1st set victory.
The 2nd set would again see the Islanders start a bit behind the eight-ball, as they found themselves in an early 6-5 second set deficit. Coronado, as they so often can and will do, quickly flipped the switch and ripped off a 6-0 run in the middle of the set to take a commanding 11-6 2nd set lead.
Ashlynn Proctor would collect two aces during the run, while Emily Page would record yet another teardrop kill. The Islanders often utilized that soft touch shot against Mission Bay.
The Buccaneers were clearly afraid of being beaten by Coronado’s hitters, as such they often were moving back before the Islanders had even struck an attack; the Islanders quickly picked up on this and continually beat them short.
The 6-0 run would spark the Islanders the rest of the way, with Emily Albin and Elle Bradbury closing things out with a kill and Ace, respectively to hand the Islanders the 25-16 second set victory.
In the 3rd and final set, Coronado would come out and quickly stomp out any hope of a comeback Mission Bay had, ripping off a 14-6 run to start the 3rd set. That lead would only continue growing as the Islanders eventually grabbed a 23-13 lead.
After a brief 3-0 run by Mission Bay, Coronado would close out the set, and match, with back-to-back kills from Albin and Ashlynn Proctor, wrapping up the set at 25-16 and handing the Islanders the 3-0 victory.
Following the dominant win over Mission Bay, Coronado would pick up yet another win later in the week against Scripps Ranch. However, the victory would be much more contested.
The Islanders prevailed in a five-set marathon match, in which Coronado won three straight sets to overcome a 2-0 deficit and take home a 3-2 victory, pushing their league record to 5-0.
As stated at the top, Coronado now owns a record of 30-3 in 2024, with a perfect 5-0 league record.
The Islanders will return to action this week with matches against Patrick Henry & University City, both of which will be City Eastern League matches.
