Last week, with victories over Torrey Pines and Carlsbad High School, the Coronado Islanders girls’ lacrosse team proved to many that they are the best in San Diego County.

This week, Coronado took things a step further, cementing themselves as the best team in the Western Region of the United States with wins over the No.1 ranked program in the state of Virginia, St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes and the No.1 ranked program in the state of Illinois, Loyola Academy; keeping Coronado undefeated in 2025.

Thursday afternoon’s game against St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes was the definition of a game played down to the wire, with the Islanders narrowly coming away with the 11-10 win.

In the first quarter, Coronado was effective and efficient in the attacking third of the field. St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes jumped out to an early 2-1 lead, but that lead was soon erased thanks to goals on back-to-back possessions by Breck Dunn and Sydney Dunn, making it a 3-2 game in favor of Coronado with 2:07 to play in the first.

In the quarter’s final minute, the Islanders struck twice more thanks to a slashing goal from Breck Dunn, off a nifty assist from Madie Collins, and a driving skip shot goal by Maria Anaya, making it a 5-3 Islanders lead at the end of one.

Returning to action in the second quarter, Coronado quickly extended its lead thanks to a pair of goals from Breck Dunn, the latter of which was an excellent finish on an eight-meter penalty shot, making it a 7-4 lead with 9:56 to play.

Coronado would grab another goal over the half’s final nine-plus minutes of action, but the biggest moment in the half’s final moments would come from goalie Emma Terri. With 3.9 seconds to play before the break, St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes was awarded a penalty for a shooting space foul.

Terri would deny the penalty shot attempt with an outstanding save moving to her left, keeping Coronado ahead 8-4 as we hit the half.

Returning from the break, Coronado’s attack picked up where it left off as Sydney Dunn netted two more goals of her own to make it a 10-4 game with 10:08 to play.

With the hot start in the third, it appeared Coronado was starting to put the game out of reach for St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes. But the visitors from Virginia didn’t go quietly, as over the final 10 minutes of the quarter, St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes went on a 4-1 run to make it an 11-8 game.

The lone goal from Coronado during that run came off a mid-range laster from Sienna Kieffer with 55.8 seconds to play in the third.

In the fourth quarter, St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes continued to apply pressure, netting two goals and drawing it to an 11-10 game with 2:12 to play.

Fortunately, over the final 2:12, Coronado would not waver, and deliver with a critical final offensive possession that saw the Islanders retain possession and run out the clock for the final two minutes to secure the 11-10 win.

Following the dramatic win Thursday, Coronado took care of business against Loyola Academy on Saturday afternoon, dismantling the visiting Ramblers 17-8.

With their 8-0 record, Laxnumbers.com has Coronado slated as the No.1 ranked team in the Western Region and the No.1 ranked team in California. Meanwhile, MaxPreps has the Islanders currently listed as the No.10 team in the United States.

The undefeated and top-ranked Islanders will return to action to take on San Ramon Valley High School on April 8th, with game time set for 5:00 p.m.
