After a long drive and weekend playing out in the Arizona desert, the Coronado Islanders’ softball program returned home for a much-welcome home game against Bayfront Charter High School.

In recent history, the friendly confines of Green Field had treated the Islanders well, as dating back to last season, Coronado had won seven of their last eight home game.

On Wednesday afternoon, Coronado stayed hot at home as they battered Bayfront Charter 14-0, with the game ending in the fifth inning due to the mercy rule.

“I think with how deep it is in the allies and how fast the turf plays, it certainty gives us that home field advantage,” said Islanders Manger Tom Dull. “Then on defense, getting those true hops off the turf every day at practice allows us to be comfortable come game time.”

To push 14 runs across the plate, Coronado would have 16 hits as a team, with four of their starting nine putting together multi-hit performances.

At the top of the lineup, Maren Hawley would jump-start the Islanders at the dish. The senior went four for four on the afternoon, with four RBIs, a double, and an inside-the-park home run.

“Maren has such exceptional hand-eye coordination, she is difficult to strike out, and she has a great feel and understanding of the zone,” said Dull. “With her speed, any ball she hits on the group has the potential to be a base hit. When your lead-off hitter has four RBIs, it also means the bottom of your lineup is doing its job and flipping the lineup over.”

Hawley wouldn’t be the only Islander to circle the bases against Bayfront, as Samantha Aldworth also stayed hot at the dish with an inside-the-park home run of her own as the headline for her two-for-three day. Through 10 games, Aldworth leads the team with three home runs.

Pairing with the huge offensive output from their offense, the Islanders also received a strong outing in the circle from their ace, Ali Pecus. In three innings of work, she held Bayfront hitless and punched out five, lowering her ERA to 2.10 on the season.

“Ali wants the ball every game,” said Dull. “Ali understands match-ups and how to attack hitters. She’s done a better job of trusting her defense and letting the girls behind her work, and knows they’ll make plays behind her.”

To close out the game for Coronado, Dull would turn the game over to Tatum Munoz. The senior had struggled a bit here early in 2025, but against Bayfront she put together her best outing of the season, working two innings, allowing one hit, and striking out two.

“Tatum’s best attribute, since she has been a freshman, has been her ability to spot and locate her fastball,” said Dull. “Against Bayfront, she did a great job of locating and inducing soft contact. She wasn’t afraid to pitch inside, and did well controlling both sides of the plate.”

With the commanding 14-0 win against Bayfront, Coronado’s record now stands at 3-7. The Islanders will return to action this week with a game on March 26th against Madison High School, at Madison High, with the first pitch set for 4:00 p.m.
