The Coronado High School Girls Golf team went 1-1 in their past week of play, getting yet another win against Scripps Ranch, and dropping the other to La Jolla High School.

The game against La Jolla High was a close one, with Coronado falling 230-261. Leading the way for Coronado would be Elleaire Lyons and Dhara Jost. Lyons would again card the low number on the day with a round of 42, while Jost would pencil in a round of 47.

Following not too far behind would be the freshman pairing of Cristina Orvananos and Jadon Foy. The two first first-year varsity golfers put together season-lows of 54.

To round out the day, Viviana Esponda put together a round of 64, while Victoria Manzano walked into the clubhouse with a score of 80 on the day.

Following the loss to La Jolla, Coronado rebounded quite nicely, winning yet again against Scripps Ranch.

Much like in the team’s first match of the week, Lyons would again lead the way, this time putting together a nice round of 40. It was not only the lowest score of any Islander, but also the lowest score from either team on the day.

In the year, Lyons had a personal stroke differential of 3.64, placing her as one of the top 50 individual golfers in San Diego County, with a score of No.44 overall, to be specific. In the win against Scripps, Coronado would be without Jost; as such, Orvananos would step up and deliver a round of 61.

Rounding out the day for the Islanders would be Viviana Esponda, who carded a 64, while Jadon Foy put together a round of 68, Eliza Taylor a round of 69, and Victoria Manzano closed things out with a 74.

With the 1-1 week, the young Islanders golf team now has a 3-5 record in Western League play and an overall record of 5-6. It’s not the dominant team that folks saw win the Western League every year from 2019-2022 or the group that won the 2023 City Tournament Championship.

But for group of first year players, 2024 has been impressive in its own right. Improvement have been noticeable week to week; and sitting just one game below .500 the Islanders will have opportunities to get a few more wins before the postseason and CIF play starts.

Coronado will be back in action this week with two matches, the first of Oct. 15th against OLP and the second on Oct 16th against Point Loma at Torrey Pines golf course.
